In other words (unless
you register with the site first), if you try to "snip" the same long URL more than once -- in
order to choose a new nickname or because you forgot to choose a nickname the first time -- it will
not allow you to do so! *
(If you forget to choose a nickname
and go ahead and "snip" the url, you will get a combination of letters and numbers for your nickname, instead of something
you choose that actually makes sense!)
Therefore (unless you register
with the site first), also make sure the nickname you first choose is the one you really want, because you will not
be able to change it later!
A disadvantage
-- once at your site via the shortened link, the original url still shows in the address bar of the browser (it is NOT "masked").
Free - TinyURL
You can also shorten a long
link for any website at www.TinyURL.com
The only drawback is that you don't
have any control over the "nickname" portion of the resulting link, as you do with SnipURL (above).
A disadvantage
-- once at your site via the shortened link, the original url still shows in the address bar of the browser.
This one is okay if you just quickly need
a short URL for something and it doesn't matter to you that you cannot control the resulting text of the
url or edit it later, or that the original url will show in the address bar of the browser once at the site.
GoDaddy.com Purchasing Domain Names with Free Forwarding
Once you have a free company website or any kind
of replicating type of website that has a long, difficult URL/link -- to make things easier, you
can purchase a domain name that is simple enough that people can remember it easily, and that is
easy for you to tell people over the phone often, especially when prospecting leads.
If you want to purchase your own domain such as...
www.YourOwnPurchasedDomainName.com
...we recommend www.GoDaddy.com because they offer free domain redirection (forwarding), and their domains are very inexpensive.
Plus, their whole process is very user-friendly, but even so, they have a customer support service available 24/7.
When you are forwarding your domain to an existing website:
1)
You DO NOT need "hosting" for your website, because the website already exists and is hosted by someone already.
(People who are building their website from scratch themselves would need hosting.)
2) It automatically selects the choice of a 2-year
purchase of your domain -- IF you only want 1 year (or more than 2 years), change the selected
option.
3) If you do not want the domain to automatically
renew each year, UN-check the box that says it should automatically renew.
4) The GoDaddy.com domain purchase process shows
you tons of optional services to add/purchase, but ALL YOU NEED is their FREE FORWARDING service,
which comes with your purchase of the domain name.
This means you can "point" (redirect or forward) your domain name which
you purchased to your company website or any other website if you decide to use another one later -- so
then, when people type in www.YourOwnPurchasedDomainName.com they will get to your site -- whichever site you have chosen to set up the
forwarding to!
NOTE: You must set up the free forwarding after you purchase
the domain name, in the GoDaddy website "back office" at www.GoDaddy.com
After you purchase your domain name, GoDaddy will send
you confirmation emails containing important information.
You will need to know your Login Name or Customer Number
and your Password to login to their back office and set up the forwarding of your domain name to your web
site.
The back office is pretty self-explanatory, but if you run into problems,
they have awesome telephone customer service reps that will help you around the clock, 24/7.
Again, f
you have any problems at all with either purchasing your domain name or setting up the forwarding, GoDaddy provides 24/7
LIVE TELEPHONE CUSTOMER SUPPORT.
IF you
call them when purchasing a domain name, be sure you make them understand THAT THE ONLY
THING YOU NEED is the FREE FORWARDING of your purchased domain name to a replicated (or other) website
URL!
Do not let
them talk you into purchasing ANY OTHER services (unless you want them)!
